An Exhortation

Spare Us, Critics!
Before you write, think twice.
Spare Us, Critics!
It's more than light advice.

With good or bad reviews (always hurt),
Both ways we stand to lose (our shirt).
We really do not need
Praise if readers only read.

Spare Us, Critics!
The type is still not set.
Spare Us, Critics!
Your hype will kill us yet.

The arts get no support (us with pay)
From experts who report (ev'ry day)
To those who spread the word
About music they've not heard.

Talk is cheap. Talk is cheap...

I dream of a world where reviewers are banished
To restricted library shelves.
A world where the need for reviewers has vanished
For people find out for themselves.
There'd be cash in the coffer to spare.
But for now we must offer this prayer:

God,
Spare Us Critics!
God Spare Us Critics!
Hear our humble prayer!
Amen!
